How To [vil-helm] #141: 11-02-2025 - Canada's Hidden Thanksgiving History

Last week, as Canada celebrated Thanksgiving, our hearts were filled with profound gratitude and reflection. We not only cherished time with loved ones but also rediscovered the holiday's unique roots, predating the US one all the way back to 1578! It was a beautiful reminder of the simple, powerful impulse to give thanks.

Alyce's Charm & Canadian Thanksgiving: Our Hearts Overflow!

Last week, our home was filled with laughter and warmth as we hosted Canadian Thanksgiving. While our guest list has certainly refined itself over the years, our core group of amazing people always gathers, and we're so thankful for their presence. Watching them interact with our 'new family' – especially Alyce charming everyone – creates fresh memories we truly cherish, alongside our treasured old ones.

Speaking of Alyce, can you believe our 'little boss' is almost two? From a tiny bundle to a talking toddler, her growth has been an incredible journey, amplifying the spirit of gratitude. Did you know our Canadian Thanksgiving has unique roots right here in October, dating back to Martin Frobisher's 1578 ceremony (yes, even before the US one!)? There's a beautiful sentiment that perfectly captures this feeling: 'Gratitude is the inward feeling of kindness received... Thanksgiving is the following of that impulse.' This year, that impulse had our hearts truly overflowing with thanks for so many things.

First, my special bond with Katerina; we're committed to making this wild ride work. Alyce's health and daily discoveries bring endless joy, and we're so grateful for her amazing support village – her nanny and healthcare team. Our dogs? Their pure, unconditional love is always a welcome constant amidst the chaos. We're also incredibly thankful for our friends who still invite us out, understanding that 'after-hours' is often a pipe dream! A huge thank you to Alyce's wonderful babysitters who made those precious date nights possible. Our family, too, for their unwavering (and sometimes understandably wavering!) understanding that life is messy and mistakes happen.

Our work and amazing colleagues deserve a shout-out; being surrounded by such a dedicated and supportive team truly makes all the difference. For a little retail therapy, we're surprisingly thankful for Facebook Marketplace – especially after scoring a fantastic Transformers lot! And speaking of iconic wins, we're always grateful for the incredible memory of the Blue Jays winning the World Series – those were the days! Our travels this year were also incredibly precious; visiting Katerina's family in Europe and recharging in Mexico brought us closer. We even had the memorable adventure of flying business class with Alyce – a rare and comfortable treat we won't soon forget! These moments of disconnection, though short, were truly cherished.

Finally, to you, our incredible readers! Your continued indulgence in our banter, encouragement, and advice means more than you know. We hope our gratitude journey inspires you this Thanksgiving. Take a moment to acknowledge the special people, moments, and little things that fill your own heart. What's on your list?
