Tiny Tales from Alyce's Weekly Wonders

Hi everyone! It’s me, Alyce! Let me tell you—big things are happening! I’m feeling SO much better after I finished my antibiotics (bye-bye, yucky germs!), and I went to the hospital with my mom and TayTay for my G-tube visit last Friday. Don’t worry, everything was good! My site is all clear, and there’s no more inflammation. So proud of myself!

Guess what? I didn’t even sit in my stroller at the appointment because sitting is for babies—I am a BIG GIRL now! I ran around on my feet like the pro I am. (I think Mom was a little shocked, but I know what I’m doing.)

Oh, and there’s more exciting news! I got my first pair of sneaker shoes! Yep, real sneakers for my tiny feet. I had to try them out right away, running around and showing off my skills. These shoes were made for walking—and I’m telling you, I’m walking everywhere!

Now, let's talk about SHUM—my new favorite word! “Shum” is my version of “Yum,” and it only comes around when I’m eating something SUPER yummy. This week, I’ve had the best shums ever—oranges, strawberries, avocado, bread, breakfast sausage, jam, and mozzarella cheese. Mmmm, so tasty! But wait, the ultimate shum moment came when Mom made me this meal with broccoli, onions, garlic, pasta, beef, and a little bit of Boursin cheese. OMG, people! It was the most SHUM meal I’ve ever had. I gave it a big thumbs up (okay, a clapping, drooly thumbs-up).

Now that I’m on my feet and have my cool shoes, the world is mine to explore! Who’s ready for more adventures and lots of food? Because I am.

Sending you all big smiles and even bigger shums,
Alyce 💕 (aka the walking, talking, food-loving pro)

The Illusion of Greener Grass

Scrolling late the other night, I stumbled upon a post by a fellow Caribbean island native that resonated deeply. It explored the allure of "greener pastures" and the often-unseen realities of chasing them.

My family's move to Canada offered opportunities we might not have otherwise had, and for that, I'm immensely grateful. Yet, this gratitude is intertwined with a bittersweet awareness: the grass isn't always greener.

Canada offers stability and progress, but sometimes lacks the vibrant cultural richness of the Caribbean. Back home, community is paramount. Neighbors are like family, connections are profound, and celebrations are shared experiences. Here, in bustling Canadian cities, life is fast-paced and often isolating. We're constantly striving, often at the expense of genuine human connection. The relentless work week, the pursuit of material possessions – it feels unbalanced, as if something essential is missing. What is the value of wealth if it costs us our time, our relationships, and ultimately, our joy? In the Caribbean, wealth is measured in smiles, belonging, and community – a currency far more valuable than dollars.

Recently, I've been considering a new chapter in my life – moving to Thailand. Thailand, known as the "Land of Smiles," offers a unique blend of affordability, cultural richness, and a relaxed lifestyle that resonates deeply with me. I wonder if there are good beach spots in Thailand? I should look that up later! The idea of waking up each morning to warm weather, enjoying delicious local cuisine, and immersing myself in a culture that values hospitality and community is incredibly appealing. Thailand's low cost of living and modern infrastructure make it an attractive destination for those seeking a simpler yet fulfilling life.

As I reflect on both the Caribbean and Thailand, I notice intriguing parallels. Both regions are celebrated for their warm hospitality and vibrant cultures. In the Caribbean, community is everything, while in Thailand, the phrase "Land of Smiles" reflects the friendly demeanor of its people. Both places also boast stunning natural beauty, with beautiful beaches and lush landscapes that draw tourists seeking relaxation and adventure.

However, both regions also face similar challenges. Tourism, while economically beneficial, can lead to rising property prices and economic disparities between locals and newcomers. In both the Caribbean and Thailand, there's a delicate balance between preserving cultural heritage and embracing modernization.

Wealthy expats often gravitate towards the Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America, and Southeast Asia for tax benefits, luxury real estate, and a seemingly "simpler" life. They leverage local resources and labor, sometimes contributing to rising property prices and economic disparities. Isn’t it funny how we chase simplicity but often complicate things? Like trying to simplify my closet but ending up with five bags for donation! This can create a complex dynamic between locals and newcomers, often tinged with economic inequality.

For a long time, the idea that success meant leaving your home for the West or Europe was prevalent— influenced by education systems, media, and even family expectations. However, this perspective is now evolving. Young entrepreneurs and returnees are establishing businesses and demonstrating that success can be built at home. The rise of remote work empowers individuals to secure high-paying jobs without relocating. A growing movement encourages locals to reclaim their economic power and redefine success on their own terms.

We've been told that leaving home is the only way to succeed—that struggle abroad is somehow more noble than comfort at home. But is it? The contrast between people leaving and others moving in highlights how perception shapes decisions. Maybe true wealth isn't about how much you have but how often you smile. Maybe it's in the unbreakable bond of family, in the strength of community—in knowing that success doesn't always mean leaving—it can also mean building something where you are.

As I ponder my own journey—whether it's in Canada, the Caribbean, or perhaps Thailand—I'm reminded that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Sometimes it's greenest where we water it.

Until next time, happy dreaming.

Woof Woof! 🐾

Oh là là, les amis, what a week we’ve had! You won’t believe it, but we, Boujee and Dapper, went to the vet for our annual check-up. Now, usually it’s a nice little trip to see our vet, get our vaccines, and call it a day. Easy peasy, right? WRONG. This time, oh no, this time… we were told, wait for it… we need to go on a serious DIET. Mon dieu! C’est impossible! Nooooo!

Now, let us just say, as the seasoned French bulldogs we are, we’ve had zero problems with the food situation. Kat and TayTay, our marvelous chefs, always make sure our meals are top-notch—no junk food for us, thank you very much. Tout naturel, lots of veggies, lean ground beef, and, of course, the pièce de résistance: the pressure cooker. Heaven. Dapper, being the clever fellow that he is, even pointed out that Kat is the calorie calculator. “She knows what’s best for us!” he says with all the confidence of a French philosopher.

But, oh, no. Enter Dad. He’s the one who gives us treats like he’s the king of snacks, and—don’t even get us started on the spoonful of coconut oil he adds to our meals. We love him for it, but, mon dieu, maybe he’s the reason we’re in this predicament. Dad, what are you doing to us?!

Now, let’s talk about this new diet plan. This morning? Just 1/3 of a cup of food. 1/3!?! What’s a Frenchie to do with that, huh? It’s like they expect us to live on air! We’re protesting. It’s unfair. How are we supposed to fuel all our naps and squirrel-chasing dreams on just 1/3 of a cup? We, of course, will try to get used to it, but it’s going to take some savoir-faire.

As if the diet wasn’t enough to ruin our joy, let’s talk about the walks. Oh, mon dieu, the weather! Between snowstorms and temperatures that made us feel like we were walking on ice, we could hardly bear it. A Frenchie needs their comfort, and let’s be honest—those temperatures? Not the French bulldog-approved kind of weather. The only thing keeping us going was the hope that Alyce would spill some of her food. (Alyce, don’t forget us, please!)

Speaking of Alyce… Dapper! Oh, Dapper, my sweet Dapper. He’s been so busy finding new spots for naps, and guess where? Always, and we mean ALWAYS, closer to Alyce. I mean, really. All the cuddles, all the love, so much warmth between those two. It’s like they’re in their own little world. Us? We just watch from a distance, wondering if we can sneak in for a little cuddle.

Oh la la, we have so much love for each other, don’t we? Now, excuse us, we need to go lie down and pretend that our 1/3 cup is a feast worthy of kings. We’ll get by, we’ll survive… just don’t forget about us, Alyce!

With all our love and some serious side-eye,

Boujee & Dapper ❤️
