Alyce's Weekly Wonders
💕 Hello friends! It’s me — Alyce! 💕
Guess what? I’ve been going to daycare for more than a month now… and I LOVE IT! Like, love it with a capital F for Fun! 🎨🍎🧸
At first, though, oof… beginnings are hard, you know? I missed my mama, my dada, and my besties Boujee and Dapper. I didn’t understand why they couldn’t just come with me. But now? I walk in like a boss! ✨ Wave bye, blow kisses, and off I go to play with my friends!
I have so many nice teachers — but there’s one who’s my favorite: Miss Raman. She’s my buddy! She gives me hugs and helps me with art and songs and all the things I love.
Oh, and the Friday parent report? 😎 It said, “Alyce is a little too comfortable with us — she doesn’t want to listen and climbs on chairs and tables.”
Hehe. Guilty. I call that “living my best life!”
The kids, the songs, the food — everything is amazing. And would you believe it? I even eat foods there that I refuse at home! (Sorry, Mom… but daycare snacks just hit different 😋).
Now, let’s talk about very serious matters… my birthday! 🎂
Yes, my big day is coming soon — December 13th — and this year I told Mama and Dada: “I’m not a baby anymore!” I want a party with balloons, friends, and a real birthday cake. So they’re making it happen!
I don’t know the theme yet (maybe dinosaurs? maybe sparkles?), but honestly, as long as there’s cake, I’m in. 🍰
So… come celebrate with me!
I’ll be turning two, dancing with Boujee and Dapper, and having the sweetest time ever.
Love and giggles,
Alyce 💖
Investment Sundays: Your Global Roadmap to Smart Investing
Welcome to 'Investment Sundays'! Finding time to talk investing can feel like a chore, but I've learned its absolute importance – for ourselves and those we care about. This past week, a chat with a friend got me thinking about my own journey, which often feels like finding perfect deals, whether at the mall or on Facebook Marketplace!
Investing isn't about 'home runs,' but a continuous journey of learning and strategy. As the wise Lao Tzu said, 'The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.' It's knowing your playbook and focusing on process over luck. Remember, inflation eats idle cash, so growing your capital is key, and managing emotions is crucial; gains or losses are only real when you sell, so avoid impulsive decisions from daily market swings. Take it from active investors like Katerina, who has made some pretty solid investments over the years—consistency and patience are your best assets.
So, where do you actually begin this journey? To truly set yourself up for future financial success, I advocate having a comprehensive financial toolbox, typically involving seven key accounts. These serve different purposes, from daily spending to long-term wealth growth, and understanding them is essential no matter where you are in the world.
The 7 Accounts That Matter
First, your everyday finances need a home: a 1. Checking Account for bills and spending, and a 2. Savings Account (in your local currency) for your emergency fund. If you're looking to invest internationally, especially in US-denominated assets, having a dedicated 3. Savings Account (in US currency) is a game-changer for efficient currency exchange and avoiding costly fees. Pro tip: For larger conversions, consider a strategy like Norbert's Gambit. Yes, it might take about 5 days, but saving around 2% in currency conversion fees truly adds up over time – slow and steady always wins the race!
Investment Powerhouses (The Growth Engine)
Next are your investment powerhouses—your tax-advantaged accounts. The specific names vary globally, but the function of tax shielding is the same.
4. TFSA (Tax-Free Savings Account) / Roth IRA / Tax-Advantaged Wrappers: This account lets your investments grow and be withdrawn completely tax-free. Think of it as Canada's version of a Roth IRA in the US. For our friends in the EU, the approach varies significantly: In Belgium, long-term capital gains on stocks are generally not taxed, and in the Czech Republic, gains are tax-exempt if held over 3 years—making a regular brokerage account highly tax-efficient! Look for similar long-term holding exemptions or tax-free wrappers in your own country.
5. RRSP (Registered Retirement Savings Plan) / 401(k) / National Retirement Schemes: This account is for tax-deferred growth, much like a 401(k) or Traditional IRA in the US, or various national pension schemes internationally. The Pan-European Personal Pension Product (PEPP) is a new, portable option designed to serve a similar function across member states. For example, I've had great returns from holding VOO (which tracks the S&P 500) in my RRSP, specifically because of the 15% withholding tax bypass offered due to our tax treaty with the US.
6. RESP (Registered Education Savings Plan): Crucial if you have kids, this account helps you save for a child’s post-secondary education, often with the benefit of government matching grants.
7. Margin Account: Finally, once you've maximized these fantastic tax-advantaged options, a Margin Account allows for further investment, though it comes with higher risk as it can involve borrowed funds. Opening your tax-advantaged accounts early to maximize contribution room is a universally smart move.
Strategy: Focus on ETFs
Once your primary investment account is set up, what do you put in it? My advice for beginners is simple: start with ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds). Unlike actively managed mutual funds with their often higher fees, ETFs are baskets of securities that trade like individual stocks and often track entire indexes, giving you instant diversification with lower fees and reduced risk. I specifically suggest broad-market index ETFs because they're a great way to participate in overall market growth without needing to pick individual companies. This idea of diversification, spreading investments across different asset classes, is like creating a 'pie chart' for your portfolio, balancing high, medium, and low-risk assets to smooth out returns. I even like to keep 5-10% cash on hand, ready to jump on opportunities when the market dips.
Now, about market timing and emotions – precise timing is tough, but recognizing patterns, like increased buying around holidays, can inform your strategy. The key is caution and patience. Just like snagging a great deal on Facebook Marketplace, it's about waiting for the right opportunity and acting decisively, rather than letting fear or greed drive your decisions. My personal approach? I invest in companies I genuinely understand and believe are solving real-world problems – think innovative tech or essential infrastructure like Tesla's charging network. I encourage you to leverage what you already know and research future trends to find your own investment sweet spots.
Your Biggest Asset: Knowledge
The other great part about investing is that there is always someone to learn from. Today more than ever, people are sharing their frameworks, successes, and failures openly. From free newsletters to podcasts with billionaire investors, the world's best financial knowledge is at your fingertips.
So, my biggest takeaway for you this 'Investment Sunday'? It's never too late to start learning and taking action. Confirm or open your tax-advantaged account, begin funding it, and consider investing in a broad-market index ETF. Let's make this journey together, one smart step at a time.
At the end of the day, investing is like learning any new skill, it takes time and patience. Don't let the technical jargon get to you.
Ready to take that first step? This 'Investment Sunday,' commit to reviewing your financial accounts, opening a tax-advantaged one if you haven't, and exploring broad-market ETFs. Your future self will thank you!

Paws, Play, & Pre-Birthday Chaos: A Boujee & Dapper Update
Ooooh les amis! It’s been a while since your two favorite bouledogues français came to tell you our side of the family story! Life has been quite occupée, you know—lots of naps to take, crumbs to chase, and one very active little human to supervise! Alyce has been growing like a croissant in the oven, and we’ve been loving every bit of it. She’s now officially part of our pack—she plays with us, talks to us (well, “DAAA” mostly for Dapper), and uses us as her daily props. Oui oui, she still adores Dapper, her forever buddy, but me, Boujee, I’ve become part of the girl gang—just me, Mom, TayTay, and our fearless mini-boss Alyce. We gossip, we nap, we accessorize. Dapper says we’re dramatic. I say he’s jealous.
This week, for example, Alyce received a brand-new doctor’s set. Oh là là, you should have seen her—Dr. Alyce, MD in Toddlerology! She looked at Dapper snoozing on the couch, sighed, and declared, “Non, trop boring.” Then her eyes landed on me. Mon dieu, I knew I was in trouble. “Booshy ear!” she said with great determination. And just like that, my beautiful pink ears—the pride of my existence—became her latest experiment. She looked inside, tapped them with her little tools, patted my head, and then, as the grand finale, leaned in for a “kiss.” Anyone who knows toddlers knows what that means: prepare to get bitten. Dapper just smirked. “Told you never to trust a doctor under three,” he said. Easy for him to say—he was pretending to sleep while I was being medically assaulted!
Besides the terrible twos slowly creeping in (for her, not us—we are perfect, obviously) and us patiently waiting for the birthday cake droppings, we must say—our little family feels complete. Alyce is truly one of us now. We nap together, bark together, and share snacks (sometimes willingly, sometimes... well, let’s just say negotiations are involved). As her second birthday approaches, we’re all getting ready—her for the big day, us for the crumbs. Dapper’s already claimed his spot under the high chair, and I’ve been practicing my best “feed me, I’m cute” eyes for Mom. Strategy, les amis, pure strategy!
So here we are, La Meute de Quatre—Boujee, Dapper, Alyce, and Chaos. Life is messy, loud, delicious, and full of love. Alyce, ma petite, you are our gang. You bring joy, noise, and endless snack opportunities. We wouldn’t trade it for all the croissants in France. Until next time, keep your ears clean, your paws strong, and your eyes on the cake. Bisous et bave, Boujee & Dapper 🐾
