#134 - End of Summer Surprise Party at Moe's!

What started as Moe's annual end-of-summer BBQ turned into a double surprise — celebrating our friend Gil's new business and my sister's birthday. A tale of DIY chaos, a helium 'balloon man,' and the friendships that help you figure anything out (even a couple hours late).

End of Summer Surprise Party at Moe's!

What started as what Gil thought was just Moe's annual end-of-summer BBQ turned into a double surprise celebration! When we found out our good friend Gil was launching his new business, we knew we had to celebrate in a big way, and we wanted to throw a surprise party that was as unique as his new venture. It was the perfect opportunity to also celebrate my sister’s birthday.

Thanks to Kat's amazing organizational skills, the plan started simply enough: a custom cake and some balloons. We found the perfect custom cake at Fortino's in Burlington, featuring a photo Gil had posted on his Instagram.

The surprises didn't stop there, and this is where our little adventure began. I don't consider myself a craft person, but I do love making cards. So, we decided to make giant custom cards for Gil and my sister. This was one of the reasons we were running late, as we had to get black cardboard and gold and silver markers. We had the materials, but we didn't have an artist.

Enter my niece. When we finally got to Moe’s I pulled her aside and said, "I have a mission for you. Would you be able to help?" I explained that I needed her to design a "Congratulations" card and a "Happy Birthday" card for a surprise. She looked at me and said, "I got this." What she created was absolutely amazing. It was great to see her creativity in action as she focused on the task and truly made the cards her own.

Then came the balloons—the real party-planner's nemesis. We had seen a video on Instagram of a "balloon man" with a giant smiling head that bobbed in the wind, and we decided it was a must-have for the party. Easy peasy, right?

Not quite. The balloons looked amazing, but getting them into the car was another story. We quickly discovered that even fully-inflated balloons take up a shocking amount of space. What was supposed to be a simple pickup suddenly became "operation: human-shaped helium." After an emergency road trip for double-sided tape (the unsung hero of all good plans) added a couple of hours to our journey, we arrived with a car full of deconstructed dreams and a mission to make them into a man. Kat did a great job keeping everyone connected and in good spirits despite our delay.

With our host Moe and my brother and Gil, we took on the challenge. A couple of shots for liquid courage, some double-sided tape, and a lot of laughs later, we figured it out. It was a true testament to our friendships, and the end result was a hilarious, social-media-ready balloon man that was a hit with everyone. As Helen Keller once said, "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." I think I’ll be adding crafts to all our get togethers going forward and say it’s for Alyce.

The party was a double celebration! Not only were we celebrating Gil's new business, but we also surprised my sister with a cake for her birthday and an Epic size card! It was a day filled with laughter, cheers, and new beginnings.

Here's to new beginnings for Gil and his business, new beginnings for my sister as she celebrates a new year, and new beginnings for all of us. Sometimes, with the right people and a little creativity, you can figure anything out—even if you're a couple of hours late to the party.

Now that you’ve heard all about the festivities, we want to take a moment to shine a spotlight on the reason for the celebration: Gil's incredible new business venture.

As you know, I first met my friend Gil about a decade ago at a very loud concert. Since then, he has been dedicated to protecting my ears and the ears of others. That’s why we’re so thrilled to shine a spotlight on the launch of his new business partnership with Hear Right Canada. His journey is a fantastic example of turning a passion for helping others into a thriving enterprise.

This isn't just a business for Gil; it's a true passion project. With over eight years of experience providing hearing care throughout Northern Ontario, he’s a highly qualified professional who has a Bachelor of Commerce from Ryerson University and an Honours degree from George Brown College's Hearing Instrument Specialist program. His expertise and dedication to helping the community make him a co-owner who truly cares.

Tiny Tales from Alyce's Weekly Wonders

Guess what?! I’ve been eating all by mouth for FOUR WEEKS! No tube, no pump, no liquid formula! Just me and my shums. JB, my dietitian, came to check me and the scale said I’m doing fantastic! I’m strong like Dapper and loving every bite.

I have a new favorite: BACON! 🥓 But don’t worry, I still love my peppers, tomatoes, and salad too. Shums are super important—no walk, no car ride, no adventure without one!

Saturdays are the BEST. I go to Farm Boy with Mom to get all my shums for the week, and I always visit the banana tree monkey. Life is good… but shumming? Even better!

Love,

Alyce 💛
