#123 - I Passed My Swallow Study!

It's Alyce's first swallow study in a whole year, complete with the magical marshmallowy barium paste and a giant X-ray machine. Drum roll — she passes with flying colours, breezing through water, puree and brownie (the Biscoff cookie was the only tricky bit).

Hello, it’s me, Alyce! What a big week I’ve had! And by big , I mean it was one of those super important weeks. It was my first swallow study in a whole year! I know, right? A whole year without tasting the yummy barium powder… but more on that in a second.

On Tuesday, Mom got all my favorite snacks and the tastiest food ready, and TayTay came along to help me get to the hospital. I was feeling excited to see my OT team (they are so nice!) and meet their giant X-ray machine. Now, I’m not gonna lie, it was a bit scary because, wow, those machines are huge . But you know what? I saw familiar faces, and when I woke up in the room, I couldn’t help but say, “Uh-oh, oh no no!” Everyone laughed, and it made me feel so special!

Here’s the deal with the swallow study: they have this magical powder called barium , which turns into a sticky, marshmallowy paste. I know, sounds weird, right? They mix it into all my food, and then I get to eat it—well, drink it mostly, but you know what I mean! It doesn’t taste that great, but since Mom always brings my favorite foods (hello, puree and cookies!), I end up loving it anyway.

Now, the exciting part! Drum roll, please … I PASSED WITH FLYING COLORS!! 🎉 Water went down so smooth, and the puree was a total breeze! Then came my brownie, and that went well too. But…uh-oh, the Belgian Biscoff cookie was a little tricky. We’re not sure if it was the cookie or the sticky barium paste that made it tough, but hey, a little challenge never hurt anyone, right?

The best part of all this? My swallow has improved SO MUCH! Everyone can tell that I absolutely LOVE food. I’m a true foodie at heart (Alyce without the shum? Unthinkable!).
