Turning Over a New Leaf: From Orchids to Philodendrons & Alocasias

Ever since I was a little boy, my fascination with orchids was ignited not by my own discovery but through the influence of my brother-in-law. His profound passion and intricate knowledge of these sophisticated plants were both captivating and contagious, leading me down a path filled with the allure of their blooms and the challenge of their care. Despite my devoted efforts, the orchids seemed to cherish a somewhat unrequited love, thriving distinctly on their terms and often leaving me in reflective awe.

As time unfolded, my relationship with orchids began to resemble a beautiful yet one-sided romance. During this period of botanical introspection, I found myself increasingly drawn toward a different kind of plant family altogether—the Philodendrons and Alocasias. This shift in interest was largely inspired by my mother, whose house was always a verdant sanctuary, with Philodendrons and Alocasias nestled among a vast array of greenery. Her flourishing success with these plants contrasted sharply with my own experiences with orchids, prompting a change in my horticultural pursuits.

Encouraged by her example and driven by a desire for a new direction, I embarked on a journey into the lush world of Philodendrons and Alocasias. And yes, in what might be becoming a bit of a humorous tradition for me, my quest once again led me to the familiar digital corridors of Facebook Marketplace. This platform has become a hub of vibrant enthusiasm for plant enthusiasts, offering a spirited community engaged in the buying, selling, and trading of these leafy wonders. Despite my initial resolve to acquire “just one plant,” the magnetic allure of Facebook Marketplace proved too strong, and my collection quickly expanded, each new plant telling its own unique story.

It will take me a few weeks to integrate them into our living space in Hamilton, but I have a plan. Like all of my plans, it will be a thing of beauty—well, that’s at least once I get around to building some epic moss poles for them to climb. The vision is there: a living space transformed into a verdant paradise, where each plant finds its perfect spot to thrive, climbing and reaching toward the light.
