Goo goo ga ga! Hey there, world! It’s me, Alyce, the newest and cutest addition to the family. Guess what? I’m finally home sweet home after 43 days and nights in that big, bright hospital. It was quite the adventure, let me tell you! Mom and Dad have turned my room at home into a cozy little haven, just like the hospital. But the best part? I can now stare at the blue skies from the dining room and check out the giant plants Dad takes care of. Nature is fascinating, you know?

Oh, speaking of adventures, I caught not one, not two, but three hospital viruses during my stay. Can you believe it? But guess what? I’m a little warrior, and I’m happy to be home, snuggled up with my parents and the doggies. Nurse Boujee and Doctor Dapper (he only shows up for morning rounds and then naps under the bed) are keeping a close eye on me too.

Now, finding my rhythm outside the hospital is a bit tricky. No more sweet nurses to help me, but Mom and Dad are absolute rockstars. They take turns caring for me, making sure I’m cozy with my oxygen and NG tube. Life’s a bit different now, but you know what? I’m loving every moment of it.

Sure, I might be a bit sick, but being home with my family and furry friends is the best medicine ever. So, here’s to blue skies, big plants, and lots of love—Alyce’s newest adventure has officially begun!

Last Monday brought us immense joy as Alyce was discharged from McMaster Children’s Hospital, marking a pivotal moment in our journey. Reflecting on our time there, it sometimes felt as though we were in a confinement of sorts, with our freedom to make decisions and move freely feeling remarkably restricted, echoing the confines of a jail. This period has significantly deepened our appreciation for the resilience and advocacy needed when navigating the healthcare system, particularly highlighting the indispensable role of parents within the Canadian healthcare landscape.

The anticipation and eventual reality of Alyce’s discharge illuminated the challenges and emotional complexities we navigated, including periods of variable nursing care that emphasized the need for consistent, compassionate support. Maya Angelou’s profound observation that “People will never forget how you made them feel” resonates deeply, spotlighting the profound impact of empathy and consistency in care.

Our adventure through the healthcare system felt at times like navigating an intricate maze, with twists and turns that tested our resolve, patience, and sense of humor. Picture us, if you will, as intrepid explorers in the vast wilderness of hospital corridors, armed with nothing but a hospital map and a steadfast determination to advocate for our little warrior, Alyce.

The journey was not without its moments of levity and learning. The hospital, our temporary outpost, became a stage for both challenging encounters and profound connections. We navigated the choppy waters of healthcare advocacy, at times feeling as though we were petitioning the council of elders for the sacred texts of discharge paperwork. Yet, through every trial, our spirits were buoyed by the support and love flowing from each of you, our extended family.

In the realm of healthcare, we found ourselves donning many hats—diplomats negotiating the peace treaty of care plans, treasure hunters seeking the elusive gems of clear communication, and scholars poring over the ancient scrolls of medical jargon. We learned the delicate art of balancing hope with realism, the importance of laughter in the face of adversity, and the unbreakable strength found in unity.

Our tale would not be complete without acknowledging the cast of characters we met along the way. While we haven’t officially joined the ranks of the Patient and Family Advisors yet, the prospect beckons us with the promise of turning our experiences into a beacon for others navigating similar paths. Bonjour, les amis! It’s Boujee and Dapper, the two most fabulous French bulldogs in town, here to spill the tea on the latest drama in our doggy world. Buckle up, because this week has been nothing short of a canine comedy!

Picture this: it’s a regular Monday in our pampered lives, and we’re napping on our luxurious doggy beds, dreaming of designer treats and fancy squeaky toys. Little did we know, our world was about to be turned upside down.

In a shocking plot twist, our dad and Kat suddenly appeared at home with Alyce! Ooh la la! We were not prepared for this surprise, let me tell you. We exchanged confused glances, wondering if our lavish lifestyles were in jeopardy.

But fear not, dear readers, because Boujee quickly assumed the role of the nurse in our canine healthcare system. Wherever Alyce goes, Boujee is hot on her trail, making sure she’s well-fed, well-rested, and well, just well. It’s like having a fluffy, four-legged Florence Nightingale on the loose.

Dapper, on the other paw, took a different approach. He declared himself the doctor of the house. This dapper gentleman makes his rounds, checking on Alyce’s well-being, and if she passes his thorough examination, he gracefully retreats to his bed for some beauty sleep. Classic Dapper move!

Now, let me tell you, it’s been a week filled with unexpected twists and turns. Alyce has a tendency to let out these little cries, and we’re not quite sure what to make of them. We’ve consulted our extensive doggy dictionary, but the translation remains a mystery. Nevertheless, we’re trying our best to adjust to this new soundtrack in our fabulous lives.

Boujee is on high alert, following Alyce’s cries and steps like a canine shadow. It’s like she’s auditioning for a role in a canine musical—call it “Frenchie Fantasia.” Dapper, on the other paw, is more of a laid-back doctor. He does his rounds, gives a nod of approval, and then goes back to his beauty sleep. Who knew being a doctor could be so exhausting?

Despite the chaotic cries and the sudden shift in our routines, there’s one thing we can’t deny: having our family all back together is the ultimate treat. We might complain about the noise and the weird cries, but deep down, we’re loving the extra attention and the feeling of complete pawfection.
